DRAGON FRIED RICE - A 2024 group exhibition showcasing eight local YEG Asian artists during the 2024 Lunar New Year season

Presented by LAST MODERN EVENT VENUE

Supported by Edmonton Heritage Council, Edmonton Arts Council, City of Edmonton, Edmonton Community Foundation, The Centre for Race and Culture, Shang De Martial Arts Association

Dragon Fried Rice explores the vibrancy and distinctiveness of Asian diasporic experiences on this land. Indo-Caribbean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Filipino, we meet on Turtle Island where our ancestral roots pull us towards each other and ask “What does it mean to be Asian?”
This exhibition invites us into a space of intimate dialogue where we look to each other to ponder our experiences of community, identity, and belonging. Similar to the shared intimacy when gathered around the table for a meal with loved ones, often with some fried rice. Like a mosaic of different stories, fried rice in Asia is universal yet unique in each of our cultures.
The works in this exhibition are tied together through motifs of home, where we can be ourselves the most. We make homes in different spaces, in rooms, and in the community spaces we share with each other.
This exhibition is curated by Jordon Hon and Yihua Zhang, featuring the works of Audrey Gamponia, Branden “Busyrawk” Cha, Jyn-Ting Ying, Kathryn Gwun-Yeen Lennon, Luigi Pulido, Matthew “Creeasian” Wood, Raneece Buddan, and Yihua Zhang.
We create art contextualized by our culture, a practice that feeds, nourishes, and demands from us. It is an act of courage and bravery, the essence of the dragon.
