WHAT WE CARRY 唐人街

Grateful for the opportunity to curate What We Carry 唐人街 at @mcmullengallery now that it’s come down. To be able to showcase contemporary artworks birthed out of our local Chinatown has been such a treat. These pieces were selected to reflect the energy and values I wanted to celebrate and spotlight from Chinatown: Intergenerational familial bonds through art, collective grief over cultural erasure, standing in solidarity and recognizing our overlapping histories with Indigenous peoples, fighting against capitalism’s prioritization of productivity, and sharing that original Chinatown spirit of resistance and care with our vulnerable community members.

I hope all of these messages came through to those who viewed the works. Thank you to the artists Cui Jinzhe, Lee Rayne Lucke, Kev Liang, Paul Giang, Megan Tsang, Stephen Tsang, Shawn Tse, Desiree Marcotte, and Victoria Guzman for allowing us to carry your beautiful art from Chinatown into the McMullen.

Thank you to @sun_calligraphy, Danny @ddross, Jeff @jeff.klass and @aiyacollective for hosting Chinese calligraphy+painting and incense cone making workshops during the show’s duration! Thank you to Auntie Wai-Ling for all of the show’s translation into traditional Chinese for the cultural accessibility. Thank you to everyone who attended the closing reception and huge thank you to Tyler @ty_candy, Ellen @elccunningham, Holly @holly.goli, and Kasie @kasie.m.campbell from the McMullen Gallery for their support, positive energy, and platform to bring these artworks from Chinatown into the hospital gallery setting. It was truly special.

Lastly, thank you to Shawn for co-curating this all with me! Your can-do attitude continues to motivate me and keep me focused on the big picture.
